 The idea of ​​providing the Brazilian Navy with a Brazilian Nuclear Submarine began to be considered in the 1970s and evolved in a more practical way between 1976 and 1978 with the Brazilian nuclear program (nuclear navy program).

In this edition, Vice Admiral and Naval Engineer Elcio de Sá Freitas explains the steps of the Brazilian nuclear program and the reasons for the development to take so long.

There were three basic points that should be overcome. The first dealt with the domain of the nuclear fuel cycle (ZARCÃO and CICLONE projects). Second, Brazil would have to design and develop a nuclear reactor (REMO project) sufficiently compact for a submarine hull. The country also needed to design and build a submarine hull (COSTADO project) to receive the reactor under development.

At the time, it was a very big challenge for a country that had never built if it wants a conventional submarine and was in the middle of nuclear agreements with Germany. More than 40 years later, the Brazilian nuclear submarine program has won the title of the longest program in the Brazilian armed forces.

Brazil has the ambition to build its first nuclear submarine, to accelerate development a partnership was made with France, PROSUB (Submarine Development Program). The agreement signed in 2008 provides for the transfer of technology for the design and construction of submarines.
